Greening Plans for the North Inner City

Trees! Dublin needs more trees. More particularly, the north inner city needs a lot more trees. We are the least green area in the entire city and the entire country. And Dublin as a whole city underperforms for tree coverage compared to other European cities (e.g. Dublin has 6% tree coverage whereas London has 21%).

Zebra Crossings are coming to Dublin City Council

I chaired a working group of Councillors and Council staff to consider whether we should proceed with a programme of zebra crossings and am delighted to have full support from the Council now. I believe this is a progressive and important step to giving pedestrians greater priority across the city.

Dublin's E-Scooters: Issues, Concerns and Opportunities

E-scooters get plenty of good and (mainly) bad press in Dublin. Many people worry that they are a danger to pedestrians or to the users themselves. But they are continuing to grow in popularity and as a fast, cheap and (somewhat) sustainable way to get around the city, they have a role to play in the future of Dublin's transport. Here I've tried to address some of the questions and concerns I frequently hear about them and what the Government and Council can/should do next.

Works on the Royal Canal Greenway Phase 3 begin

The Royal Canal Greenway from North Strand to Phibsborough will begin work soon. This is currently a well-used, but a little neglected, walking and cycling route. The upgrade will provide new greening, wider and segregated paths and a new bridge over the canal. I am excited to see this project finally underway and think it will be a huge asset for the area. However, I have a few concerns about the process and final design.

I have advocated for more greening, traffic calming, safer walking and cycling, cracking down on illegal gambling advertising, education and engagement on the street names of Dublin, litter and dumping, on proving emergency accommodation for the area and the vision for the future of Dublin as a climate safe city.

Gritting the footpaths

Like so many others, I have been really frustrated over the past few days as the temperatures have plummeted and our footpaths have become incredible dangerous and icy. Dublin City Council currently has a policy of only gritting the road carriageways when conditions are icy to make it safer to drive but they do not grit the footpaths. This leave the paths treacherous for all who use them. I have written to the city manager looking for an urgent change of policy.

Trees Removed on West Road, East Wall

Some trees were recently felled by DCC staff on West Road in East Wall. This is really disappointing to see but unfortunately needed to be done because of the condition of the trees. Below I have included the information I received from the Council about the trees. I am following up to ensure that a new greening plan is put in place ASAP for this area.
