Questions and (some) Answers on Responding to the Homelessness Crisis

On joining Dublin City Council in September 2019, I was acutely aware that the city is experiencing a crisis in housing and homelessness. I had the opportunity to join the Lord Mayor, Hazel Chu’s homelessness taskforce in September 2020 and, through engagement with service users and providers, got a deeper understanding the challenges we are facing in responding to this crisis. I believe our services should be underpinned by human rights standards, mental and physical healthcare supports and an unequivocal commitment to ending homelessness and rough sleeping. Below are some core concerns and issues I have raised and the answers I have received.

Grangegorman Filtered Permeability to be made permanent

Homeless Taskforce Update

Representatives of almost every party participated in the taskforce - listening to the experiences and expertise of service users and service providers and seeking solutions to the crisis facing our city. On Friday 11th December the group met Minister for Housing Darragh O'Brien to present our proposals.

Supporting the Grangegorman filtered permeability scheme

This summer a trial began of a “filtered permeability” system on Grangegorman. This means that bollards and plant boxes were installed to prevent through traffic for people driving cars and leaving the road open for people to walk, cycle and scoot on a traffic-calmed street.
